GIRLS WHO CODE CLUB LAUNCHES IN KINNELON

Girls Who Code, a national non-profit working to close the gender gap in technology, will launch a club in Kinnelon for girls in grades 9 – 12. Meetings will be held on Thursdays at 3 o’clock at the Kinnelon Public Library. The first meeting will be Thursday, March 9th at 3 o’clock. The club is free and no previous computer science knowledge is required.

The Kinnelon Girls Who Code club will be a fun, non-competitive, supportive group. The girls will design a CS Impact Project, where they will learn to use computer science to solve a problem relevant to their community. The members will learn the Core 4 computer science concepts that form the basis of computer science languages. These concepts are critical whether in building a mobile application, a website or programming a robot.

The Kinnelon Girls Who Code club will also feature guest speakers and tap into the greater Girls Who Code community and network – which includes corporate support, a summer immersion program, hackathons and a sisterhood of alumni. Girls Who Code has grown from 20 girls in New York City to 10,000 girls in 42 states. By 2020, there will be 1.4 million jobs available in computing related fields. While U.S. graduates are on track to fill 29% of those jobs, women are on track to fill just 3%.

Girls who are interested should contact the club facilitator, Eve Balick at evebalick@gmail.com. Feel free to come to a meeting and check it out.
