Kinnelon Mayor Issues Statement On Sunday's Peaceful Protest
Kinnelon Mayor Freda has issued a statement to residents in regard to Sunday's "Black Lives Matter" march.
June 5, 2020
People have asked me to explain what is going on in Kinnelon with the “Black Lives Matter“ march on Sunday. First, I would like to say everyone in our country has the first amendment rights which allow our citizens the “right to assemble“ and the “freedom of speech“. Former Kinnelon High School graduates have asked me to allow them to have a peaceful march and gathering at our town hall. They have this right as citizens of our country and our town. I have met with our Chief of Police and the organizers to make sure this remains a peaceful and respectful march to support their cause. This march will be monitored and patrolled by our Police Department and also the Morris County Police Department. The Governor of New Jersey supports demonstrations and protests with groups larger than 25 people. He tells demonstrators and I quote “you have the absolute right to go out and peacefully, rightfully protest” . He is asking participants to wear masks and practice social distancing.
In the end, I am confident we will have no issues throughout this event. The individuals engaged in this demonstration and our amazing police force will work together to ensure all parties will act accordingly. Kinnelon is an welcoming town so let’s put our best foot forward.
