Menendez and Booker Back Kinnelon's Quest For A ZIP Code

The borough has made multiple attempts to secure a ZIP code different from Butler's.

KINNELON, NJ— Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker have backed Kinnelon's latest attempt for its' own ZIP code, nj.com reported.

Kinnelon currently shares its ZIP code with Butler, and residents say packages, and even first responders, frequently go to the wrong location because of overlapping addresses.

"We understand that the USPS has yet to offer a viable solution to alleviate the concerns of the (borough)," Menendez and Booker said in a letter to U.S. Post Master General Megan J. Brennan, nj.com reported. "We strongly believe that Kinnelon's existing delivery concerns, public safety concerns, coupled with the unique makeup of the Borough merits a new, unique zip code."

Kinnelon has a population of 10,400 and Butler's is just over 7,600. Butler is home to the local post office, and Kinnelon does not have one, which is why they currently share. A post office is not part of the request for a new ZIP code.

Kinnelon Mayor Robert W. Collins has said a ZIP code will cost little or nothing for taxpayers.

The local government is trying to gauge public support with a short online survey. The questionnaire asks about how often different types of mail gets sent to the wrong place, and if residents have ever had problems with emergency services.
