Riverdale, Wanaque Police Honored For Stopping Route 287 Suicide

Two officers will be honored in a ceremony tonight for their roles in preventing a suicide last month.

RIVERDALE, NJ— Police officers from Riverdale and Wanaque are being honored for stopping a potential suicide on a Route 287 bridge last month.

A ceremony to honor the officers will take place Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Wanaque Municipal Building. Officers will receive citations for their lifesaving efforts.

On Dec. 1, police received a call that a young woman might be trying to commit suicide by jumping off of a bridge on Route 287 South.

Sargent Mark Kershaw of the Wanaque Police and Patrolman Kyle Parrill of Riverdale Police found the woman on the outside of the fence of a bridge in Wanaque.

Over the course of 45 minutes, Parrill spoke with the woman, calming her down while Kershaw coordinated a rescue effort.

Police were able to get the woman off the ledge, and she is now receiving the help she needs, the Riverdale Police Department said on Facebook.

New Jersey State Police, Wanaque Fire Dept., Wanaque F.A.S, Pompton Lakes F.A.S. and New Jersey D.O.T. all assisted police in their efforts.
