UPDATE: Dump Truck Strikes Vehicles, Injures Five

Police said between seven and eight vehicles were involved.

Five people were transported to Chilton Memorial Hospital after a dump truck driver lost control of his brakes and hit between seven and eight vehicles before overturning coming down the hill on Route 23 in Riverdale Monday morning, according to Riverdale Police Chief Kevin Smith.

Smith said the accident occurred around 7:45 a.m. Traffic was moving and Route 23 was open by 11 a.m.

"A [driver of a] dump truck that was fully loaded coming down the hill claims he lost his brakes and struck all the cars," Smith said.

Traffic was backed up throughout the tri-boro Monday morning as Riverdale police cleaned up from the accident, which occurred on Route 23 South and Windbeam Road, police said.

Smith said multiple EMS agencies responded to transport the victims, including Tri-Boro First Aid Squad, the Pompton Lakes First Aid Squad, Riverdale First Aid Squad and Chilton's EMS vehicle.

Hamburg Turnpike, in Bloomingdale, was backed up past Macopin Road, which had cars lined up into West Milford. Main Street, Butler, and Boonton Avenue also had a heavy volume of traffic.

"The entire length of Hamburg Turnpike is backed up," reader Katie Goddard said.

Jessica Hascup Valente posted about how long she had been in her car.

"Ninety minutes, just got out of Bloomingdale," she said at about 9:45 a.m.

At 9:25 a.m., Tri-Boro Patch reader Kevin Keck commented that traffic was still backed up on Hamburg Turnpike.

"Eastbound Hamburg Turnpike is backed up to the entrance from Route 23 South in West Milford," he said.
