26 Hardy Runners Take on Fat Tuesday Run

Two-mile run and pancake dinner benefits Cedar Grove High School students' summer trip to Germany, Hungary and Austria.

Cedar Grove High School held its second annual Fat Tuesday two-mile run and pancake dinner yesterday, as a fundraiser for the Music Matters organization, which donates its profits to the music and drama departments at the school.

“It’s a good little speed workout,” said veteran runner, Tim Decker, 43, of Verona, who won the race with a time of 12:09. “There’s not many weekday races during the winter,” he added.

The run started at the Cedar Grove Community Pool, where the runners headed down Little Falls Road to the Elks Lounge and back twice.

The run, started by Phil Jessen, the father of CGHS Music and Choir Teacher Jen Jessen-Foose, at the town’s high school, attracted 26 runners this year  — even with the low 40-degree temperatures, said publicity volunteer and parent Barbara Silber.

“I just wanted to beat my brother,” Anthony Fabrazzo said, who was timed at 16:37. “But I didn’t.”

The proceeds from the registration and pancake dinner are being donated to the music department’s 10-day trip, which will bring 75 students to Germany, Austria and Hungary beginning April 8.

There are four European performances already set up, said Cheryl McCabe, president of Music Matters. Last year, the parent-teacher organization, raised $700 for the music department’s trip to Nashville.
