CEDAR GROVE, NJ — Free lead screenings will be available for children and pregnant women who live in Cedar Grove.

The clinic is open to children ages 1 through 6 and pregnant women who reside in Cedar Grove or Montclair, according to the township's listing.

Lead exposure can be especially harmful to young children and during pregnancy, making the clinic a convenient opportunity for residents to be screened close to home. Exposure can damage a child's brain and nervous system, contributing to learning, behavioral, hearing and developmental problems, according to the EPA. During pregnancy, lead can reach the developing baby and increase the risks of miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight, the CDC says.

Residents should contact the township or Montclair Health Department before attending to confirm registration or documentation requirements.
