VERONA, NJ — Verona will mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a community flag raising in October, and residents are invited to wear pink and take part.
The Verona Township Council, WINGS Cancer Support and Minette's Angels are inviting the community to a Breast Cancer Awareness Flag Raising on Monday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Verona Civic Center, 600 Bloomfield Avenue, according to a Township of Verona announcement.
"Wear pink. Start a conversation. Support a neighbor. Encourage someone to get screened," the township wrote in the event announcement.
The township said WINGS Cancer Support provides free programs and a supportive community for women facing cancer at any stage of their journey. Monthly programs are held at the Verona Community Center, according to the township.
Minette's Angels was founded in 2004 in memory of Verona resident Minette Grosso McKenna, one year after she died from breast cancer. The foundation supports breast cancer patients and survivors and provides assistance to those in treatment.
The township noted that 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime, adding "when we come together, pink becomes more than a color."
