An Interview with a Man-Eating Plant

Classic rock musical "Little Shop of Horrors" at Verona High School.

Verona High School is presenting “Little Shop of Horrors” and junior, Alex Karpinski, plays Audrey II, an exotic plant with a deadly appetite.

Patch spent a few minutes with Karpinski recently discussing the musical and his role:

Patch: What is “Little Shop of Horrors” about?
Alex: Little Shop of Horrors is a rock musical that tells the story of a dopey guy (Seymour) in love with a ditz of a girl (Audrey) and he finds a plant that he names Audrey II.
Patch: What type of plant is Audrey II?
Alex: In the play Seymour states “I think it's some type of flytrap. But I can't identify it in any of my books." Audrey II describes itself as a “Green Mean Mother from Outerspace." There have been other plays about aliens, but this just happens to be a good one.
Patch: What’s it's like to be a huge man-eating plant?
Alex: This has been my dream role ever since seeing the movie. I have to say being evil is the most fun. In past plays I have been on stage but this time I sing off-stage. Audrey II is worked by a puppeteer.
Patch: Has it been hard working with a puppeteer to coordinate Audrey II’s movements to your voice?
Alex: The puppeteer is Evan Yee, a senior, and we have been working together since Feb. 7 when Audrey II arrived. He knows all my lines, the tricky part is the entrances.
Patch: Since this is a classic show, can you tell us anything unique or different this production may be doing that audiences can look forward to?
Alex: I can’t tell you about surprises but the finale will be impressive. This is a great show with a great cast – the best of everything. Tom Williams is our set designer and the sets are amazing.

“Little Shop of Horrors” will be presented on Thursday, March 1, Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3 at 7:30pm. Tickets will be on sale at the door - $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students.
