Cedar Grove School Still Fixing Flood Damage: Asbestos, Carpet
Cleanup and remediation work continues at South End School in Cedar Grove after a storm-related flood wreaked havoc on the building.

CEDAR GROVE, NJ — Cleanup and remediation work continues at South End School in Cedar Grove after a storm-related flood wreaked havoc on the building earlier this month.
Cedar Grove Schools Superintendent Michael Fetherman issued an update on the cleanup effort on Tuesday.
According to Fetherman, one of the most pressing concerns is “asbestos removal” in three locations. However, things are looking good in the school’s media center and all of the 16 classrooms that suffered serious water damage during the storm on Aug. 11.

“Let's start with the heavy lift...asbestos removal (yes, some flooring areas still contain it) has begun in three isolated locations. Once complete, testing will be performed to ensure safe occupancy. We will post those important notices just as soon as we can. Flooring will be replaced in those areas ASAP.

“The Media Center is painted - and looks awesome! New carpet tile is being installed tomorrow along with new bookcases and ceiling tile in areas where the ceiling leaked.
“Classroom furniture is being temporarily moved into a large, on-site storage container so that we can re-wax all classroom and hallway floors. All new base cove is being installed, too.
“All affected classrooms have been painted and look great! A special thank you to our teachers who have been asked repeatedly to move, take down and reconstruct their classrooms!
“All electronic items (chromebooks, laptops, smartboards and desktops) are being cleaned and serviced and should be ready Friday, Monday the latest.
“Air duct cleaning is scheduled for Thursday morning.
“Landscape repairs and power washing is on-going. SE is going to look better than ever! Work will continue through the weekend on setting up classrooms, office spaces and play areas.
“Thanks to all who have helped, offered to help and pledged to help replace any and all lost items. We got this!”
