Cedar Grove Superintendent on Medical Leave

Cedar Grove Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gene Polles, who is set to retire in June, may not be finishing up the school year, the Board of Education announced Tuesday.

Polles informed the Board on Thursday, April 25, that he will be on medical leave effective immediately.

“It's nothing life-threatening,” said Board of Education President Frank Mandala, who added that he could not give any further information.

“He is following the advice of his doctors,” he added.

It is unclear whether Polles will be able to return to work before the end of the school year but the Board is planning ahead as if he will not, said Mandala.

During the public Board meeting on Tuesday, Cedar Grove High School Michael Fetherman was made Acting Superintendent. He will fill the role as well as continue his duties as principal.

While Fetherman is filling in as a temporary solution, the Board is actively seeking a new superintendent for when Polles officially retires.

“On Monday night we will have a meeting with the New Jersey School Boards Association and staff to provide input and give feedback to the board,” said Mandala.

The community is also invited to attend an public meeting with New Jersey School Board members for an open discussion on what residents are looking for in a superintendent. The discussion will take place at 7 p.m. at Cedar Grove High School.

The Board currently has 31 application submissions for superintendent. The deadline to apply is Friday, May, 3.
