A tornado warning, flash flood watch, lightning, thunder and a torrential downpour may have moved the One Hundred Eleventh Commencement inside, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the jubilant graduates of Verona High School, Class of 2011. Families, friends and graduates were crowded into the gymnasium, with minimum fans and no air conditioning, resulting in shiny, but all the while, smiley faces.
More than 150 graduates entered to the obligatory Pomp and Circumstance procession by Edward Elgar, as played by the Verona High School Band. The audience applauded while fanning themselves with commencement programs.
The evening continued with inspirational speeches by the student speakers. Valedictorian, Jody Freinkel, in her speech condensing the lessons she has learned during her high school years, remarked, “Happiness doesn’t come only from achieving goals or dreams. Happiness doesn’t just come from the end; it also comes from the before and the during. Don’t always be looking toward the destination; love the journey, live in the moment…take pleasure in the little things and by choosing to be happy wherever you are, whoever you’re with.”

Jack Denton, Salutatorian, commented on the social media changes his class has seen in the last decade. Denton encouraged his classmates, “Look up from the screen every so often, make a difference…go out and make your life worth re-tweeting.”
The heartfelt speeches proceeded with comments from Senior Class President, Alexander Sniatkowski and Paul Corrente, Student Council President. They were followed by a presentation of highlights of accomplishments by the Class of 2011, offered by Assistant Principal, David Galbierczyk. Director of Guidance, Kimberly Ferlauto presented the High Honor Students. Board of Education President, John Quatrocchi and Charles Sampson, Superintendent of Schools extended congratulatory speeches to the class.
