“Sandwiches for the Sandwich Generation,” a Program for Caregivers

In an effort to alleviate caregiver stress, Verona LIVE (Lifelong Involvement for Vital Elders) is hosting “Sandwiches for the Sandwich Generation” on Monday May 9, from 6-8 p.m. at the Verona Community Center, 880 Bloomfield Avenue.

The free program, which will provide support and resources to those caring for an aging loved one, is open to caregivers from Verona and surrounding communities. A light dinner will be served.

A major goal of the evening is to familiarize caregivers with local agencies and organizations that can assist them. The program will include an interactive presentation by Wendy Sabin, a social worker at Jewish Family Service of MetroWest (JFS) who is also the social worker at Verona LIVE. Sabin’s presentation will address areas of concern for caregivers including coping with stress, knowing when help is needed, how to ask for help, and how to access resources.

Before and after the presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to visit a resource fair with representatives from close to 20 local providers including: the Township of Verona, the Verona Police Department and Rescue Squad, Mountainside Hospital, Saint Barnabas Health Care Services, JFS, Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest NJ (JVS) Caregiving Companions, the Alzheimer’s Association, and more. Caregivers will be able to learn about a wide array of services including transportation, telephone reassurance, caregiver support, and mental health resources for older adults and their caregivers. Many of the providers will have applications and giveaways.
