Incumbents, Newcomers Announce Council Candidacy

Both Verona and Cedar Grove will have new challengers for the May township council elections after two residents filed applications to run for council seats.

On Monday, March 4, Stacy Kilkenny, a High Point resident, who has been very vocal at council meetings, submitted her application and petition for the Cedar Grove election.

Three seats are open in Cedar Grove with Councilmen Joseph Chiusolo, John Zunic and E. Romeo Longo up for re-election. Both Chiusolo and Zunic handed in their applications for the ballot, said Martina Meding of the Cedar Grove Township Clerk's Office.

Two other applications have been given out but neither has been turned in as of Tuesday, March 5, said Meding.

Longo has served three full-terms on the council since 1995 and has not yet filed his paperwork, but has said in the past he said he was “seriously considering” running.

In Verona, three council seats are also open with councilmen Kevin Ryan, Jay Sniatkowski and Bob Manley up for re-election, although none of the incumbents have filed their applications as of Tuesday afternoon.

Newcomer Al De Old of Verona, who can be seen at just about every council and board of education meeting, also filed for his candidacy, according to the Verona Municipal Clerk's Office.

Registered voters who are current residents of the township and have lived in the township for more than one year are eligible to run.

Packets can be picked up at the municipal clerk’s office. The packets include all information on requirements and candidate information.

Potential candidates, including the incumbent councilman, need to fill out a packet and get 90 signatures from registered voters.

The deadline for submitting petitions is 4 p.m. on Monday March 11.
