Man Slaps, Kicks Verona Cop Who Offered Him Ride Home: Police

Verona police arrested a man last week for allegedly slapping and kicking an officer who was attempting to give him a ride home.

Verona, NJ – Verona police arrested a man on Jan. 18 for allegedly slapping and kicking an officer who was attempting to give him a ride home, authorities stated.

Verona police stated that the incident began when officers were called to a Bloomfield Avenue business to “check on the welfare” of a patron.

On arrival, the officers observed the man – later identified as Charles Spiker – walking across Bloomfield Avenue.

Officers made contact with Spiker and offered to drive him home if there was a responsible party that could care for him, police stated.

When police attempted to get a phone number from Spiker, he allegedly became “argumentative” and slapped and kicked one of the officers.

The officers then arrested Spiker and transported him to police headquarters, where he was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, making terroristic threats and resisting arrest.

He was released after posting bail, police said.
