North End School Reads to Restore the Shore

North End Elementary School Principal Traci Dyer posed students with a reading challenge for Read Across America with a special bonus if they met the goal.

Pre-k and kindergarten classes were challenged to reach 25 books while grades one through four were challenged to read 50 books between Jan. 9 and Feb. 15.

When the students met the challange at the close of Read Across America week at North End School, Dyer was required to don a princess outfit, perform princess tests and kiss a frog.

Students, teachers and parents also participated in the Read to Restore the Shore program by sponsoring students to read.

North End School had 170 students sign up and collected more than $2,000 for schools effected by Super Storm Sandy.

All the proceeds went to restocking book shelves at schools in the Shore area. Usborne books, a children's book publishing company, promised to donate an additional 50 percent of what was collected.
