Report: Cedar Grove BOE Seeks Ouster of Washington Academy

The school owes more than $130,000 in back rent and fees

at 520 Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove needs to pay up more than $130,000 in back rent and fees or be evicted by the Cedar Grove Board of Education, according to a report from Verona-Cedar Grove Times.

The school currently occupies the Leonard R. Parks elementary school, which is owned by the BOE, according to the same news report.

"According to a summons filed Oct. 13 in an Essex County court, the school board is owed $96,250 in unpaid rent; $24,740.66 in maintenance and utility fees; and $9,240 in late fees pursuant to the lease agreement," read the news report.

Washington Academy, a private school, serves students as young as three and as old as 21 with mild to moderate behavioral and learning disabilities. It first opened in South Orange in 1982, and moved to Cedar Grove in 1997.

The school has been the scene of several incidents recently, including assault, theft and a false fire alarm, resulting in several of its students being taken into custody by police,
