Biker Falls To His Death At Mills Reservation In Montclair, Cedar Grove
A bicyclist from Wayne apparently lost control and plummeted off a cliff at Mills Reservation in Essex County, police say.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A bicyclist from Wayne apparently lost control and plummeted off a cliff at Mills Reservation in Essex County on Monday, suffering fatal injuries, authorities say.
According to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place around 9 a.m. in Mills Reservation, which is located in Montclair and Cedar Grove.
Police said that the victim, a 49-year-old man from Wayne, was apparently riding his mountain bike near the edge of the road when he lost control and fell about 20 feet onto a rocky ledge below.

The Newark Fire Department and EMS Unit recovered the deceased man’s body around 11:25 a.m., authorities said.
The victim’s brother – who was riding with him at the time of the fall – remained on scene and notified law enforcement about the incident, authorities said.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of other family members, police stated Monday.
“While an investigation into the incident is on-going it appears to have been an accident and no foul play is suspected at this time,” Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said.
According to the Essex County website, Mills Reservation is maintained by the Essex County Park Commission. The reservation has several walking/jogging trails, including four major trails and numerous smaller trails. One of the four main trails leads to a cliff that overlooks the New York skyline.
