Chiusolo Steps Down as Cedar Grove Deputy Mayor

Peter Tanella to assume role until June 30.

Citing increased demands from his growing business, Cedar Grove Councilman Joseph Chiusolo said at Monday night's public meeting that he will step down as Deputy Mayor in the new year.

"As much as the position of deputy mayor is ceremonial, there are times when the deputy mayor steps in for the mayor. I didn't want to put the council in a position where they would not be able to function in the event that I'll be absent from a meeting or late and the mayor is not here," Chiusolo said Dec. 19.

"My position as a councilmember will continue, I will continue to be dedicated to the township, but I think this is the best decision at this point."

Following his announcement, the oath of office was promptly administered to Councilman Peter Tanella. Tanella, who has run the gamut of positions on the governing body over the years, will officially assume the role of deputy mayor on Jan. 1.

After a brief hiatus, Tanella returned to the council last October, temporarily replacing former councilman Patrick DeFrancisci following his resignation. In May, he was re-elected to serve a four year term on the governing body. He will hold the position of deputy mayor until June 30.
