There was magic in the air and plenty of booing (the good kind!) at Temple Sholom of West Essex last weekend as the community gathered to celebrate the joyous holiday of Purim with a spirited spiel, “Ester in Oz,” followed by a lively Purim Carnival.

Purim commemorates the saving of the Jewish people by Queen Esther from annihilation at the hands of Haman, an official of the ancient Persian Empire, as told in the Book of Esther. The holiday is known for its festive atmosphere, costumes, and the retelling of Esther’s courageous story through humorous performances known as Purim spiels.

Originating in 16th-century Europe, Purim spiels are comedic, often musical productions that blend satire, parody, and playful nods to pop culture. This year’s creative twist brought a Broadway-inspired flair, reimagining the story with a “Wicked”- themed set and music created by Cantor Stephanie Wright. In “Ester in Oz,” congregants cheered for Esther and Mordecai, and enthusiastically booed the villainous Haman, fully embracing the interactive spirit of the holiday.

Many attendees arrived in costume, adding to the festive Oz-meets-Shushan atmosphere. Following the show, guests enjoyed a bustling Purim Carnival featuring games, delicious treats, and prizes for all ages.
