Verona High School weekly sports wrap

A 3-0 win over Butler, followed by a 1-0 shutout over Pompton Lakes has propelled the top seeded Hillbilly boys soccer team into the North I Group 1 state sectional semifinals against Waldwick on Tuesday. Verona, which got two scores from Dominick Gagliano last week, also took its second loss of the season, in a regular season match against Science Park, 1-0. Verona is now 17-2.

The Lady Hillbillies were also able to get into the sectional semifinals with a pair of close victories over New Milford and then Pompton Lakes. The opening round win was a double overtime victory, while the win over top seeded Pompton Lakes went to penalty kicks. Julia Ashley has led the scoring for Verona with two goals and an assist while keeper Alison Sprong has been solid in net, making 19 saves. Verona, which improved to 12-8, faces Cresskill in the semis.

The Hillbilly girls' season came to an end in the first round of the North Group 1 state sectional playoffs, against Rutherford, 2-0 (25-9. 25-19). Verona ends its season with a 13-12 record.

Football:

Verona's one point loss to Weequahic on Tuesday end their chance of making the postseason this fall. They may still get a consolation game, and still have a Thanksgiving Day match up with Caldwell. Verona is 4-4.

Boys cross country:

Nicholas Lukas placed fourth and Vincent Puchik took seventh in the North II Group 1 state sectional championship race, leading the Hillbilly boys to a fifth place finish overall. Lukas came in at 17:17.21, while Puchik clocked in at 17:55.79.

 

Cedar Grove High School weekly sports wrap:

Nate Philipson scored two touchdowns as the Panther football team demolished Newark Central, 46-16. The win improved Cedar Grove to 7-2 overall and snaps a two-game losing streak. Cedar Grove unoffically has 127 power points, third in North II Group 1, and will likely face Shabazz in the opening round of the playoffs.

Girls soccer:

The Cedar Grove girls had their season ended in the opening round of the state playoffs, with a 7-0 loss to Park Ridge on Tuesday. They finished up with a 7-11-1 record.

Girls cross country:

Jacqueline Bunce placed 22nd overall in the North I Group 1 state sectional championship race, and helped Cedar Grove to a seventh place overall finish.
