
Verona High School weekly sports wrap
The Hillbilly girls soccer team won the North I Group 1 state sectional championship on Thursday, defeating Midland Park, 1-0. Verona was sparked by a second half goal scored by Coleen Farrell. Earlier in the week they defeated Cresskill 2-0, in the semifinals. Verona has not allowed a goal this postseason. The Hillbillies now move on to the Group 1 championships.

Verona got over .500 with a 28-14 win over Dayton in a state consolation game on Saturday afternoon. The Hillbillies got a punt return and kick return touchdown from Mike Harrington in the win. Verona, which improved to 5-4, plays Caldwell on Thanksgiving.

Verona's great season came to an end this week, with the boys taking two losses. The first came in the North I Group 1 state sectional semis, with the boys falling to Waldwick in penalty kicks. Troy Carrington scored early in the first half to give Verona the lead, but Waldwick came back to tie it later in the half. Verona lost 4-2 in penalty kicks. Verona ended with a 17-4-1 record.
Cedar Grove High School weekly wrap
The Panther football team advanced to the semifinal round of the North II Group 1 state sectional playoffs, defeating Shabazz in the first round, 27-13. Cedar Grove racked up 326 rushing yards in the game, led by Charlie Dorman's 163 yards. Dorman scored a touchdown, while Joe McShane added two.
