Verona and Cedar Grove Girl Scouts Celebrate 100 Years

Athough celebrated all year, March 12 marks the actually anniversary for the Girl Scouts.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts, the Cedar Grove and Verona troops donated Girl Scout books to their libraries and had an afternoon of games and arts and crafts.

In the Cedar Grove library, with over 70 scouts signed up, parents and scouts filled almost every table in the library with a line out the door.

Each table was scattered with crossword puzzles, beads and pins for the scouts to do with their parents or friends.

The service unit donated three books to each of the libraries and although, March 12 marks the actual anniversary where Juliete Gordon Low started it with just 18 Girl Scouts, they plan to celebrate all year said Trish Wilson, Cedar Grove south troop leader.

“This is the first of, hopefully several events that our service unit will do,” Wilson said.

Monday night, Verona and Cedar Grove's councils will officially recognize their donations.

“They will also get a bit of local government,” said the service unit manager of both towns, Linda Cunniff.

The Cedar Grove troop had a father-daughter dance planned for last Sunday, two weeks after Verona’s dance, on March 4.

Along with Wilson, Cunniff and Kimlani Tanella, Cedar Grove north troop leader, organizing the event at Cedar Grove library, troops leaders Meg Prout and Regina French.

Three of the books donated were: Girl Scouts-A Celebration of 100 Trailblazing Years, by Betty Chistiansen, Lady From Savannah-The Life of Juliet Gordon Low, by Gladys Denny Schultz and Daisy Gordon Lawrence, and How Girls Can Help Their Country- Handbook for Girl Scouts, by W.J. Hoxie.
