Verona Makes Changes to Recycling Collection Effective January 4th

Verona has recently made changes to areas of its recycling program to help increase participation.

Starting January 4, 2016, curbside collection will also include all Paper Products, Chipboard and Corrugated Cardboard.

Newspapers, junk mail and magazines will no longer have to be put out separately. All paper products and cardboard can now be placed at the curb together on the designated days. Residents are highly encouraged to recycle cardboard. The two primary types of cardboard are corrugated cardboard, used primarily for shipping items and chipboard which is usually cereal, gift, cracker and cake mix boxes, etc. Clean corrugated cardboard should be flattened and placed at the curb on the new designated days.

Changes will also affect the disposal of Electronic Waste. Electronic equipment includes TVs, computers, monitors, etc. Electronic Waste will no longer be accepted at the Recycling Depot on Commerce Court. Electronic Waste will only be accepted on the specified drop off dates at the Department of Public Works Yard, 5 Ozone Ave. Please note these are in addition to the two regularly scheduled Essex County Collection dates.

Due to these changes, the release of the 2016 Garbage and Recycling Brochure will be delayed until mid-January. In order to stay up-to-date residents are encouraged to download the Remyndr (pronounced reminder) app on their smart phones.

Remyndr is a community specific, smart phone notification tool available to local governments that increases curbside recycling by reminding residents of the items to be collected the following day and providing information to promote participation.

In addition to the regular help with getting garbage and recyclables to the curb, Remyndr offers Verona the ability to message residents to remind them of holiday collections, hazardous waste days and let them know if a disruption occurs. Dragging garbage and recyclables through three feet of snow only to see it still uncollected at the end of the day can be frustrating. Verona can now message residents by route, so alerts are always relevant to the recipient. Residents are also being encouraged to tell friends and neighbors to maximize the informational value to the town.
