The longtime Verona resident had a 37-year career in the Verona education system.

Longtime Verona resident Barbara M. Kistner passed away on Aug. 8.

She was 60-years-old.

“Mrs. Barbara M. Kistner, 60, died on August 8, 2015 at her home in Verona.

“Born in Passaic, Mrs. Kistner has lived in Verona 55 years.

“She was a proud graduate of Smith College in Northampton, MA and has a Masters in Urban Studies from New Jersey City University.

“Mrs. Kistner retired 5 months ago after a 37 year career with the Verona Board of Education, where she taught Social Studies and was in charge of the Gifted and Talented Program at HB Whitehorne School. At HB Whitehorne she also was Editor of the School Paper, was the Cheerleading Coach and ran the Geography Bee.

“She was a member of the Verona Education Association, the NJEA, the Essex County Steering Committee for Gifted & Talented Education, the National Council for Social Studies, the Verona Bicentennial Committee and the Montclair Golf Club.

“Mrs. Kistner was predeceased by her parents, Anthony F. and Eleanor Kolich and her brother, Anthony R. Kolich.

“She is survived by her husband, Gary Kistner, her sons Timothy Kistner (and his wife, Laura) and Ryan Kistner, her stepmother, Gerri Bannon Kolich and her siblings, Kate Rosenfeld, Kevin Kolich, Kenneth Kolich, Robert Bannon, Timothy Bannon, Kevin Bannon, Brian Bannon, Lynn Bannon Cummings and Terry Bannon.

“In lieu of flowers, donations to Verona Rescue Squad would be appreciated.”
