Verona Police: Runner Had Cardiac Arrest During Labor Day 5K

A runner went into cardiac arrest and had to be rushed to the hospital after completing the UNICO Labor Day 5K in Verona Park, police say.

VERONA, NJ — A runner went into cardiac arrest and had to be rushed to the hospital after completing the UNICO Labor Day 5K run in Verona Park on Sept. 4, police say.

According to the Verona Police Department, officers responded to the park on a report of a “down runner.” On arrival, officers found that the Verona Rescue Squad had already performed CPR on the runner, who went into cardiac arrest after the race.

Verona Rescue Squad member Susan DeWitt said that one shock was administered and the victim regained a pulse.

Emergency responders then transported the runner to Mountainside Hospital for further treatment, police stated.
