Sandy Causes Tuesday Verona School Closure

Superintendent, township officials agree at special meeting safety during storm is prime concern.

Verona Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30 as Hurricane Sandy continues to pummel Northern New Jersey.

Verona Superintendent Steven Forte, met with township officials during a special meeting on Monday night.

“Verona schools will be closed on Tuesday and the board of education meeting has been cancelled,” said Forte. “If schools are open on Wednesday, students will have a half day, as scheduled.”

A half-day for students was previously scheduled for Wed. Oct. 30 for a teacher professional development session, he said.

The board of education will determine whether they will hold Halloween festivities by Tuesday night.

The town also announced the information on a NIXLE message blast:

Verona Public Schools are closed Tuesday, October 30th and the Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening will be cancelled as well.

A decision concerning changing the date for school and township Halloween celebrations will be announced Tuesday October 30th at 5 PM based on discussions with the township regarding public safety.

Please check the website for updates. The Verona town horn will sound 2 times at 7:00 AM and again at 7:05 AM whenever the schools are closed.

Reminder - If schools are open on Wednesday, October 31 it will be a half day for students, following the approved district calendar.
