Verona Still in The Dark Post Sandy

Verona residents are at home wondering when the power will come back on, but PSE&G is leaving township officials in the dark.

Crews have been working around-the-clock trying to fix downed wires and telephone poles after the township got hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

Power has been coming on slowly with a few homes getting electricity restored by Wednesday night although township officials said the number of houses restored was “minimal.”

“We've been working with some high-level folks at Public Service to get the people dedicated to Verona to do a more timely restoration of electric service,” said Director of Verona's Office of Emergency Management Jeff Hayes.

Power was restored to the Verona Community Center as well as some homes at the North end of town, he said.

Township officials have held conference calls with PSE&G but no official estimate was made as to when power may be restored.

“They do not want to set any false expectations,” said Hayes.

Until power can be restored, residents just need to remain patient, he said.

“I visited a few facilities that have a large number of people,” said Hayes. “People are very concerned about when they will get power restored, yet they are keeping a very positive outlook on things, which is really amazing.”
