West Orange Driver Hit Pedestrian On Rt. 23 In Cedar Grove: PD

A driver with a suspended New Jersey license in a car with an expired Pennsylvania registration hit a pedestrian in Essex County, police say

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A driver with a suspended New Jersey license in a car with an expired Pennsylvania registration hit a pedestrian in Essex County as she tried to cross Route 23 on Wednesday, authorities said.

According to the Cedar Grove Police Department, Leonard Slater, 70, of West Orange, allegedly hit a 49-year-old woman with his 2009 Chevy Aveo as she attempted to cross the southbound portion of the busy highway near 82 Rt. 23 around 6:13 p.m.

The woman was hospitalized with “serious injuries to her legs and head.” The cause of the crash is still under investigation, authorities said Thursday.

After conducting an investigation, officers arrested Slater and transported him to police headquarters. Following a conference with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the CGPD charged Slater with driving while suspended, driving without a license, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle and failure to exhibit proof of insurance.

Additional motor vehicle charges may be pending, police said.
