Worker In Cedar Grove Swindled By Fake ‘Sheriff’s Officer’: PD

A caller posing as an Essex County sheriff's officer allegedly swindled a local worker out of $435, Cedar Grove police said.

CEDAR GROVE, NJ — A caller posing as an Essex County sheriff’s officer allegedly swindled an employee at a Pompton Avenue business out of $435 earlier this month, Cedar Grove police said.

According to the Cedar Grove Police Department, the incident took place on Sept. 20 when the victim got a call from a person identifying himself as an employee of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. The caller told the victim that he had an outstanding warrant for $1,600.

The caller then told the victim to get a prepaid debit card in order to post bail. The victim paid $435 before suspecting that he was being defrauded, police said.
