Today in New Jersey history:
May 23, 1848: William E. Sackett was born in New York City. As a journalist, Sackett specialized in New Jersey politics, writing for both the New York Times and the New York Herald. His Modern Battles of Trenton, two volumes on the state’s political struggles from 1866 to 1912, are classics of the genre. Sackett died on November 18, 1926.
May 23, 1943: The battleship USS New Jersey was commissioned. The New Jersey subsequently served in the Pacific during World War II and then in Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East.
