Tractor-Trailer Crash Brings Down Utility Poles, Closes Road In Wall

WALL, NJ —A crash involving a tractor-trailer brought down multiple utility poles and led to a vehicle fire, road closure and power outages on Friday morning, Wall Police said.

At 7:45 a.m. on Friday, Wall Township Emergency Services responded to the area of Route 34 North, just north of Hurley Pond Road, for a reported motor vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer that struck a utility pole.

Once authorities arrived at the scene, responders determined that a tractor-trailer exiting a business on Route 34 North became entangled with overhead utility lines, subsequently pulling down multiple utility poles, police said.

As a result, live wires fell onto four vehicles traveling northbound on Route 34.

Two occupants were trapped inside one of the vehicles, which then caught fire, police said.

Firefighters from Glendola Fire Company and South Wall Fire Rescue responded, extinguished the fire, and safely extricated the trapped occupants.

One injury was reported and treated at the scene by Monmouth County Emergency Medical Services (MEDSTAR).

As a result of the crash, Route 34 North was closed in both directions between Hurley Pond Road and Belmar Blvd to ensure public safety and allow emergency operations, police said.

The NJ Department of Transportation responded to establish traffic detours.

As of 12 p.m., police reported that Route 34 North was still closed between Hurley Pond Road and Belmar Blvd. Route 34 South in the same area was open to a single lane of traffic.

According to police, about 700 businesses and homes were also without power as a result of the incident. Utility crews remain on scene working to restore service.
