May 28, 1898: One man was killed and one injured and three powder mills destroyed in the explosion of a mixing mill at the smokeless powder works of the Dupont Company at Carney's Point.
May 28, 1978: Action Park opened in Vernon, Sussex County. The park, owned by the Great American Recreation Corporation, catered to “thrill seekers” and was known for its “alpine slide” down ski slopes, water slides and other dangerous attractions. Over the eighteen years the park, open between Memorial Day and Labor Day, was in business, at least six people died and many more were injured on its rides. The park owners bought extra ambulances for the Vernon Township rescue squad to handle the casualties. The park closed on September 8, 1996 due to the large number of personal injury lawsuits it generated.
