Bots High Documentary Goes Inside World of High School Robot Builders
Movie Offers Solution to Science and Math Education Decline; Creates a Free Worldwide Screening Day October 6th
Bots High is a funny and inspiring award winning documentary that follows three teams of high school robotics geeks who build and battle their way to a national robotics competition in Miami.
On October 6th anyone can watch a free screening of the film at InfoAge Science/History Learning Center, located at the former Camp Evans in Wall, NJ. The event will begin at 7pm. The group hosting the event is IXR - Institute for Exploratory Research, a new “maker-space” at InfoAge, whose purpose is to offer the community a place to come learn about electronics, robotics, and other technologies, through hands-on experimentation and project building. Refreshments will be available, and a tour of IXR’s technology lab will be offered.
Screenings of the film will be happening all over the world as part of a worldwide screening day. “This is an important film that needs to get in front of as many people as possible, especially kids,” says director Joey Daoud. “Film festivals and screenings are great, but it only reaches a small audience. When the trailer circulates the internet, I don’t want people to be like, ‘Looks great, too bad it’s not playing near me.’ I want them to be able to see the film no matter where they are, and now they can.”
The state of math and science education in the US is in a decline. Compared to the rest of the world, the US ranks 24th in science and 28th in math. Furthermore, there’s a large gender gap. 16% of college engineering students are female. 10% of professional engineers are women.
Bots High follows students as they design, build and compete with their robots at the BattleBotsIQ National Robotics Competition, learning valuable math and science skills along the way. Our heroes include genius inventor Will, who constructs seemingly indestructible bots that unfortunately self-destruct (sometimes in a cloud of smoke and flames), and My Mechanical Romance, a team of Catholic school girls who stand out amid male bot participants with a combination of beauty, brains, and fashion sense.
Funny, smart, and inspiring, these kids navigate high school, adolescence, and first love while reducing enemy bots to shards of scrap metal. Bots High is a family film even teenagers can enjoy.
