Three Quarters Of Reprinted Wall High School Yearbooks Picked Up

The books were reprinted in the wake of a controversy after a student's Trump-supporting T-shirt was censored.

WALL, NJ -- Of the 200 yearbooks reprinted for Wall Township High School in the wake of the censorship of a student's Trump-supporting T-shirt, 180 have been picked up by students and staff.

The Asbury Park Press reported that as of July 18, 28 of the reprinted books had been picked up. Wall Superintendent Cheryl Dyer on Thusday said as of Aug. 3, 180 books have been picked up.

The books were reprinted in the wake of censorship of the Trump T-shirt worn by Grant Berardo for his junior year photo in the book. Also censored was a Trump quote cited by freshman class president Montana Dobrovich-Fago, Dyer has said.

Dyer investigated the issue in June when the censorship of Berardo's T-shirt came to light after yearbooks were distributed. The controversy that ensued led not only to a decision to reprint the books but the suspension of yearbook adviser Susan Parsons.

When Dyer announced the reprinting of the yearbooks, she said that reprint would not cost taxpayers as it was being paid for by sponsors.

Joseph Berardo, Grant's father, paid for more than half of the estimated $10,000 cost, donating $5,279 toward the reprint, Dyer confirmed. Berardo has been quoted as saying he was satisfied with the investigation that was conducted into the censorship issue.

Lors Photography, which handles the district's school photos, paid $3,000, she said.

Some in the community, including Wyatt Dobrovich-Fago, who said his sweater bearing a Trump logo was censored -- though Dyer's investigation found his photo was cropped similarly to other students' photos and not deliberately censored -- questioned whether Dyer should be investigating and claimed a New York Times opinion column she shared last November had created the environment that led to the censorship.

The Wall Township Board of Education, however, accepted the findings of Dyer and the plan to reprint the books.
