Girl Scouts Announces Open House Dates at Camp Sacajawea
Summer Day Camp in Farmingdale Nurtures Appreciation for the Outdoors
Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore is offering a wide variety of summer camp experiences for girls ages 3 to 15 at Camp Sacajawea in Farmingdale. Interested families are invited to tour the day camp and meet the staff at an upcoming open house for the 2020 summer camp season, which runs June 22-August 28.
“At Girl Scout day camps, girls thrive in the great outdoors, take on new challenges and make new friends in a fun and safe environment,” said Eileen Higgins, CEO of Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore, which operates Camp Sacajawea and Camp Amity Acres in Barnegat.
Situated on 144 wooded acres in Farmingdale, Camp Sacajawea features one-week sessions filled with activities such as archery, kayaking, swimming, science, climbing wall, zip line, sports, performing arts, STEM (science technology, engineering, math), nature and much more.

Higgins noted that the theme of the 2020 camp season is: Think Outside. No Box Required. “Being active outdoors and participating in new and challenging experiences helps girls build courage, confidence and character,” she added.
The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association and offers transportation, before and after care, a variety of specialty programs, including equestrian, technology and cooking, and mini sessions for campers not ready for a full week of camp.

Joan Basilotto, director of Outdoor Program and Facility for Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore, said Girl Scout camp not only nurtures an appreciation for the outdoors, but also “builds social skills, models healthy living, eases the summer slide, fosters teamwork and encourages personal growth.”
All girls are welcome at camp, but must be a Girl Scout to attend, Basilotto said. Girl Scout membership is available when registering for summer camp. While Camp Sacajawea is girl-focused and girl-led, brothers of Girl Scouts (ages 3-12) are also welcomed to attend, Basilotto said.
Financial assistance is available to families in need. Special savings are available for families who attend an open house and register for camp within 48 hours. Each camper who registers before April 23 will receive a backpack featuring the new camp logo. Registration is available online at GSfun.org.
All are invited to attend an Open House for Camp Sacajawea at the Girl Scouts Program Activity Center, located at 127 Yellowbrook Road, Farmingdale, as follows:
Tue., February 18, 5-7 p.m. ; Sat., March 21, 1-4 p.m.; and Fri., April 24, 5-7 p.m. On Tue., May 19, the Open House will take place from 5-7 p.m. at Camp Sacajawea, 242 Adelphia Road, Farmingdale.
