Today in New Jersey history:
March 19, 1857: Union County was established.
March 19, 1875: Charles K. Landis, founder of Vineland, walked into the offices of the Vineland Independent newspaper and shot the editor, Uri Carruth, in the head, killing him. Landis was angry at Carruth, who he believed had libeled him and his wife in the pages of the paper. He was tried and acquitted on the grounds of “temporary insanity.”
