Memorial Day Ceremony Will Be Monday In Wall

The solemn event will take place at the memorial dedicated to WWII veteran and longtime resident Harry Rockafeller.

WALL, N.J.—The township Memorial Day ceremony will take place Monday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Rockafeller Statue between the township hall and the police station at 2700 Allaire Road.

The Wall Township PBA Civic Association created the Rockafeller Memorial Fund to raise money through donations to dedicate a 9-foot bronze statue of WWII Veteran Harry Rockafeller.

Harry Rockafeller was a longtime resident who lived in Wall Township for more than 70 years.

"It is our goal to honor and forever remember a true warrior of the Greatest Generation. Every day, WWII Veterans are passing away and it is our duty to ensure that we and future generations remember their courage, bravery, and sacrifice," the association website says.

Rockafeller died in 2017 at 100 years of age.

"We believe that this statue will honor his memory and honor the memory of all our WWII Veterans," the statement says.

Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. It was originally known as Decoration Day and originated in the years following the Civil War, according to History.com. It became an official federal holiday in 1971.
