Route 70 & Route 9 Shoulder Closures Planned In Monmouth And Ocean Counties: See Details

JERSEY SHORE, NJ — Route 70 and Route 9 are scheduled to have daytime shoulder closures starting next week as a pavement preservation project begins in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, the NJ Department of Transportation (NJ DOT) said.

In addition to the shoulder closures, daily lane closures will also begin on Route 70 and Route 9 starting in mid-May and overnight lane closures will start in mid-July.

Daytime Shoulder Closures for Construction Sign Installation

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, April 27, continuing daily through Friday, May 1, at the same times, shoulder closures are scheduled in various locations on Route 70 and Route 9 in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

The shoulder closures are necessary for construction sign installation, using a moving operation in the right shoulder, NJ DOT said.

Daytime Lane Closures for Striping and RPM Removal

Starting in mid-May, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day, Monday through Thursday for several weeks, lane closures are scheduled in various locations on Route 70 and Route 9.

The lane closures are necessary to remove existing striping and raised pavement markings (RPM), using a moving operation.

Overnight Lane Closures for Pavement Preservation

Starting in mid-June, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day, Monday through Thursday for several months, lane closures are scheduled in various locations on Route 70 for pavement preservation work, using alternating traffic patterns.

Overnight lane closures with alternating traffic for pavement preservation work will begin in various locations on Route 9 in early August.

Drivers are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays when driving through the work zone. The following sections of each roadway will be affected:

• Route 70 Eastbound & Westbound:
  • From Whiting New Egypt Road/CR 539/Lacey Road/CR 530 in Manchester to Vermont Avenue/Route 36 in Lakewood, Ocean County
  • From Herbertsville Road/CR 549S in Brick, Ocean County, to Riverview Drive between Brielle and Wall, Monmouth County
• Route 9 Northbound & Southbound:
  • From Lakeside Drive to Bay Way in Lacey, Ocean County
  • From Sycamore Drive in Berkeley to Windward Avenue/Larboard Avenue in Beachwood, Ocean County

This work is part of a $9.9 million federally funded project that will preserve approximately 13 miles of pavement on Route 70 in Manchester, Lakehurst, Toms River, Lakewood, Brick and Point Pleasant, Ocean County and Brielle and Wall, Monmouth County.

In addition, the project will preserve approximately 8 miles of pavement on Route 9 in Lacey, Berkeley, Pine Beach and Beachwood, Ocean County.

The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2026.
