Today in New Jersey history:
May 27, 1978: Resorts International opened the first legal casino in the United States outside of Nevada in Atlantic City in what had formerly been the long standing Chalfonte-Haddon Hall Hotel, the largest in the city. Additions and modifications have been made since then, most notably with the addition of a tower in 2004 and renovations in 2011.
