Just added another original image to my Jerseyana collection, Governor Hoffman sub-file. Here is the, at the time former governor, in a picture taken when he was riding a stagecoach on the way to the annual meeting of the "Union Society for the Detection of Horse Thieves" in Melrose, PA. The organization, a social group of the type Hoffman seemed to love, was descended from an actual vigilante group and had a faux stagecoach robbery and lynching of a celebrity as part of its annual luncheon. Sounds bizarre today, but in 1940 it was all the rage, apparently. Newspaper accounts have Hoffman attending the get-together as late as 1950.
