Wall Disinfects School After Stomach Bug Ails Football Team

Several members of the football team came down with an apparent stomach virus last weekend, the superintendent said.

WALL, NJ — A stomach virus that affected several members of the Wall High School football team over the weekend has prompted a deep cleaning and sanitizing of the school to curtail the spread of the illness, the superintendent said Wednesday.

In a notice posted on the Wall Township school district website and distributed to parents, Superintendent Cheryl Dyer said several members of the Crimson Knights' football team had "what appears to be a stomach virus. The symptoms were nausea, vomiting and diarrhea." Some had fevers and headaches as well, she said.

The virus affected not only members of the Wall football team, but some players on the Lakewood Piners, who played against Wall on Friday night.

"Our custodial staff conducted a deep cleaning and santization of the locker rooms and athletic areas on Sunday, and the entire school over the next two days," Dyer said.

The district also had the water tested for bacteria and no bacteria were found in the water supply, she said.

"We consulted with our school physican and the Department of Health to ensure that we were taking all necessary steps to curtail the spread," she said. "However, as you know, when one member of a family is sick, it is very likely that the illness will spread to other family members. I have heard that the parents of some of the players also became ill a day or two after their sons."

"As always, please contact the school if your child is ill, and encourage your children to observe proper hygiene," Dyer said.
