BASKING RIDGE, NJ - The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonder and the beauty of nature colors begin to change in Somerset County. The Environmental Education Center provides many entertaining and educational programs for children and adults year around.

CHILDREN & TEEN PROGRAMS

 

Halloween Happenings – By the Light of the Moon

            Friday, October 18 from 6:30 P.M. to 7:15 P.M.

Led by a Naturalist, adventurers of all ages will explore the Great Swamp, listening for animal sounds ‘and experimenting in the night while walking the swampy trails beneath the stars. Walks will depart every 15 minutes with concurrent indoor activities including a maze, live critters, refreshments and more.

            Fee is $6 per person.

Halloween Happenings – The Nature of Halloween

            Saturday, October 19 from 2:15 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Explorers ages infant to 6 with an adult will join a Naturalist to stroll the boardwalk around the Environmental Education Center and meet life size misunderstood animals such as a bewitching bat, wise owl, and talking turtle.  Indoor activities include a maze, live critters, and more!  Cookies and cider top off the night. Walks will depart every 15 minutes.

            Fee is $6 per person.

Bones, Bones, Bones

            Friday, October 25 from 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M.

Children age infant to 5 with a parent will learn about creatures whose

            bones are on the inside and on the outside.

            Fee is $10 per pair and $5 per additional child

The Green Team

            Saturday, October 26 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

            Children ages 12 to 15 who have to fulfill a community service

requirement for school will enjoy the educational and fun activities

            at the Environmental Education Center.

            The program is free

ADULT & FAMILY PROGRAMS

 

Field Trips for the Fun at Heart - Bronx Zoo

            Wednesday, October 23 from 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

            Adults will enjoy a driving-free and child-free Naturalist-led trip to New

                        York’s world famous Bronx   Zoo with over 600 species of animals

                        on display.     

            Fee is $50 per adult & $40 per senior.

Bone Yard Birding

            Friday, October 25 from 9:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.

            Adult adventurers will visit some of New Jersey burial grounds that are

                        now home to flora, fauna, and the history of our state.

            Fee is $40 per adult and $30 per senior.

Animal Masks

            Saturday, October 26 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M.

Family and friends of all ages will join a Naturalist and make an animal

mask to wear just in time for Halloween.

            Fee is $9 per person.

Blue “BOBO (Buy One – Bring One) Fridays” bins now are located at the Environmental Education Center and Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge, as well as at the Somerset County Park Commission headquarters at North Branch

Park in Bridgewater.  The public is invited to drop off canned food or personal-care items for donation to Somerset County food banks.
