Reflexology Therapy

What is Reflexology?

Every part of your body has a reflex point in your feet, with the right foot controlling the right side and the left foot controlling the left side of the body. For any area of the body where function is inhibited or disease is present, grainy crystal or calcium deposits create congestion at the nerve ending. You may feel sore, tender, sensitive in these areas as a result.

Reflexology is a form of manual pressure therapy, dating back to 2500-2300 BC, which focuses on the feet and hands. Using specific thumb and finger techniques, your therapist will be able to stimulate the nerve ending to release, sending a signal up the spinal column to the corresponding area in the body.

How Can it Help?

Reflexology is proven to help relieve shoulder/neck/back pain, sciatica, stiff joints, arthritis, mood swings, insomnia, painful menstrual periods, depression, and many other conditions. With reflexology being a holistic therapy, it focuses on treating the entire body and located the root cause of the ailment. It should not be expected to be cured miraculously right away, as a disease takes time to develop -- therefore it also needs time to heal.

Perhaps the most important benefit of this therapy is its ability to reduce stress. About 70 percent of conditions can be stress and nerve tension related. Reflexology will alleviate some effects of stress by inducing deep relaxation.

This therapy also helps with the sedation of pain.  The body produces natural painkillers known as endorphins, which are five to ten times more powerful than strong painkillers such as morphine. Endorphins are produced by the pituitary gland and can inhibit the transmission of pain signals through the spinal cord.

This ability to reduce pain also makes reflexology ideal for patients who are terminally ill.  Although it may not be capable of removing the cause of disease, the treatment gives patient more comfort by making the pain more bearable.

Try it!

With the list of benefits going on and on, it will not hurt to try reflexology for yourself. Everyone’s body is different which can cause the level of helpfulness to vary, but it is important to try holistic therapies before running to the pharmacy or giving up.
