Warren Students Learn A Yummy Lesson on Rocks and Minerals

WARREN, NJ — Woodland 3rd graders used Starburst candy for a practical (and yummy) study of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks on Dec. 16.

As the culmination of a unit on rocks and minerals, students in Lisa Lenci’s class first identified the characteristics and formation of each type of rock. The class then came up with ways to utilize the Starburst squares to represent a specific rock.

“The igneous ‘rocks’ combined multiple Starbursts which were heated in a microwave and then cooled,” said Lenci. Layers of Starburst pieces made up sedimentary rocks while multiple candies rolled together (pressed and heated by hand) formed metamorphic rocks.
