Warren Students Put a Twist on Charitable Giving

From Warren Township Schools: As part of a multi-week character education project, students at Warren Middle School turned a canned food drive into an artistic tour de force.

Sixth graders first viewed the documentary “Hunger in America” last month, before discussing the importance of empathy and volunteerism. The entire school community collected approximately 1,000 cans of food, which were distributed evenly among the 6th grade classrooms.

Modeled after CANstruction, a charity art exhibition inspired in 1992 by a group of New York architects and engineers, 6th graders used the canned food, imagination and teamwork to create works of art on Feb. 7 that included pizza and pie slices, a castle, a baseball diamond, a Rubik’s Cube, a whale, and a donut complete with sprinkles.

Home Arts teacher Beverly MacGorman, who organized the project, will deliver the canned items to an area food bank.
