Wolverines Jr. Pee Wees Dominate Maplewood

Teams take on Maplewood in Sunday's games.

Gold Flag

The Watchung Hills Wolverines took on the Packers of Maplewood.  Dylan Kelly got the Wolverines on the board on the first play of the game when he took a handoff and went 40 yards down the sideline for the score. 

That play was followed by a 40-yard sprint by Matthew Dahl for the second score of the game.  Later in the game, Matthew Dahl (4 carries for 60 yards) completed a 25-yard pass to Dylan Kelly who finished the day with 70 yards rushing and two touchdowns. 

Brian Edelman (3 carries for 65 yards) broke a 40-yard run for a touchdown behind the blocking of Jackson Scala, Dean Nader and David Scali.  Harry Liu capped off the scoring by scampering 10 yards for a touchdown.  Jackson Scala, David Scali, Dalton Rosenfarb and Jonathan Hold each carried the ball 2 times for 30 yards each on the day.

The defense dominated throughout the game only allowing one score.  The defense was led by Dylan Kelly who had seven flags and Jackson Scala who finished with six.  Matthew Dahl and Scott Drews each pulled five flags and Dylan Simon grabbed four.  Christian Hagel, Dalton Rosenfarb and Dean Nader each pulled two flags while David Scali, Jonathan Hold and Harry Liu pulled one each.

Blue Flag

The Wolverine Blue Flag team packed on the rushing yards against Maplewood totaling 340 yards.  The offense scored 6 touchdowns, Martin Howell (2 carries for 40 yards), Kenny McGoldrick (2 carries for 45 yards), Riley McCann (2 carries for 20 yards), Nirio Garcia (3 carries for 55 yards), Nathan Downey (2 carries for 40 yards) and Brett Christopher (2 carries for 40 yards) each scoring a touchdown.

The defense also added a touchdown after Brett Christopher returned an intercepted pass.  The defensive team was led by Howell who pulled 5 flags, Riley McCann with 4 flags and Quentin Tao and McGoldrick each with 3 flags. 

Junior Flag

The Wolverines Junior Flag Team was impressive against the much bigger Packers of Maplewood.  The Wolverines put the ball in the end zone four times on the day as 14 players carried the ball throughout the game.  The speedy Ryan Johnson took the first play 40 yards to pay dirt behind a key block by Chase Miller. 

David Dubas had a nice 35-yard touchdown run behind key blocks by Kyle West and Michael Ohara.  Jack Clintock broke a long 40-yard touchdown run behind the blocking of Brayden Kelly, Jadon Prinzivalli and Lucas Garcia. 

Colin Hait capped off the scoring when he scampered 10 yards for the touchdown on a quarterback bootleg.

The defense was strong and held the Packers to three scores.  Chase Miller and Jayden Fernandez led the defense with four flags each followed by Colin Hait and Michael Ohara who each grabbed three. 

Ryan Johnson finished the day with two flags while Daniel Scali, David Dubas and Perry Weingarten each pulled one.  Kyle Checchio made a touchdown saving grab at the 10 yard line late in the game.

Mighty Mites

The 2012 Watchung Hills Pop Warner 'Mitey Mite' football team improved to (4-0) on the season with a 27-13 home win over Maplewood Sunday, September 23rd.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Justin Ferreira took a handoff and broke off a 50-yard touchdown run thanks to a key block by the left guard, Shane Kelly.  Justin Drews ran in the conversion.  On their next possession, Justin Ferreira broke another long run for a touchdown making it 13-0. 

The Maplewood Packers came roaring back in the second quarter scoring two touchdowns and making the score 13-13 at the half. 

The Wolverine offense started the second half like they did the first.  Justin Ferreira raced 45 yards for a touchdown and Jonathan Demontagnac ran in the extra point.  The defense held Maplewood throughout the second half behind linebackers Luke Malfetti, Luke Marion, Jonathan Demontagnac and Justin Drews. 

Justin Ferreira capped off the scoring with his 4th touchdown run of the game.  Luke Marion added the extra point to make it 27-13.  Colin Archbold, Travis Jelmert and Jack Reale had key tackles that kept the Packers from scoring late in the game.  Tyler Piggot recovered a fumble which led to one of Justin Ferreira’s touchdowns. 

The blocking by offensive lineman Shane Kelly, Josh Claxton, Jack Valenti, Mac McAteer and Luke Malfetti opened huge holes throughout the game.

Junior Pee Wee

The Watchung Hills Wolverines Junior Pee Wees pounced on the Packers of Maplewood winning 26-0 for their fourth shutout in a row. 

Andrew Reale scored three times and finished the day with 70 yards rushing on 5 carries.  Conner Cook had a great day out of the backfield finishing with 60 yards rushing on 5 carries.  Placekicker Matt Perrera converted on a 2 point PAT. 

Quaterback Matty Colantuono hit Pat Stefurak for a 30-yard touchdown strike.  Colantuono also rushed for 30 yards.  Jack Taub grounded out 50 yards on 6 carries.  The offensive line of Anthony Tomaro, Charlie Everhardt, George Rooks, Justin Uberoi and Adam Claxton dominated in the trenches opening gaping holes for the speedy running backs.

The Wolverines defense continued their domination only allowing two 1st downs and a total of 30 yards to the Packers offense.
