NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – On April 1, North Plainfield School District received a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey alleging that the district’s admissions requirements are unduly restrictive and constitute discrimination. The district is one of 136 in the Garden State that received such a letter.
The United States Supreme Court ruled that all children, including those of parents in the country without documentation, are eligible for free public education and that efforts to avoid providing such an education is illegal. In addition to federal prohibitions, the state of New Jersey law also requires that no children living within a district’s borders may be denied an education based on the immigration or visa status.
