5 Things To Do This Weekend In And Around Short Hills

If you are still deciding what to do this weekend, the area around Short Hills and Green Brook has options ranging from fresh produce and canal history to Caribbean music and children's entertainment.

Start Friday at the Rutgers Community Farmers Market, held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rutgers Gardens Pavilion, 112 Log Cabin Road in North Brunswick. The university-run market brings "healthy food from local farms" to area households, with produce, baked goods, prepared foods and New Jersey-made products.

Saturday offers two festival choices. Wharton Canal Day runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hugh Force Canal Park, 180 West Central Avenue. The free celebration of the historic Morris Canal includes live music, food trucks, vendors, children's activities and a beer garden.

Closer to Green Brook, the free Hub City Sounds Caribbean Festival fills Recreation Park, 7 Pine Street in New Brunswick, from 2 to 6 p.m. Organizers promise an afternoon of "music, dance, food and cultural pride," with reggae, soca, calypso, steel pan and dancehall among the featured sounds.

Families with young children can head to Montclair on Sunday for The Wiggles' "Tree of Wisdom Spectacular!" Doors open at 11 a.m. and the show begins at noon at the Wellmont Theater, 5 Seymour Street. Tickets are required for adults and children, although infants younger than 12 months may sit on an adult's lap without a ticket.

For a quieter Sunday outing, Rockingham State Historic Site in Franklin Township will mark George Washington's arrival at his final Revolutionary War headquarters. The free 10 a.m. program at 84 Laurel Avenue includes an illustrated introduction, reproduction artifacts and registration for grounds tours. The historic house remains closed for stabilization work.
