Clinic Takes a New Track on Pet Care

About a year ago, Dr. Scott Linick, owner of the Plainfield Animal Hospital had an epiphany: why not have a clinic offering basic care for pets?

Just like the nearby primary care physicians people know they can go to when they need vaccinations, or quick treatment for basic illnesses or injuries without incurring the higher costs of a full medical center, Linick's on Route 22 West, just west of Rock Avenue, can help his patients' owners save money.

"This is a new concept in the delivery of veterinary services," Dr. Linick said. He said that while his idea isn't entirely original—similar basic care vet clinics have opened in Indianapolis and Washington state—his Green Brook clinic and one opening within the month in Hazlet are the first on the East Coast.

BasiCare Vet Clinic doesn't have an x-ray machine or surgical stations for severe injuries—but that means the clinic's costs are lower. Dr. Linick said he hopes this will encourage pet owners to visit the clinic more frequently—especially since they will realize savings of up to 40 percent of the usual costs for comparable services at a full service veterinary hospital.

"We are really aiming at people who don't go to veterinary clinics for whatever reason," he said. "People are struggling, and being able to get services at a lower cost is good."

The clinic specializes in dogs and cats, offering packages health care plans, as well as walk-in services. The staff of seven veterinarians can assist with comprehensive examinations, early disease detection, parasite testing, microchipping, and even euthenasia and cremation.
